MATARIKI

The video script for matariki
Nahea: So today in this video we are going to explain about different ways to celebrate Matariki.

Punaiuru: Why do we Celebrate Matariki ?

Nahea: Because it's a maori new year, you can see the seven stars from northern New Zealand . It’s a Remembrance of Tamarereti who threw the 7 stones ( nowadays they are called stars ) he  threw them into the air that could show him the way back home .

Punaiuru: One way you can Celebrate Matariki is by having a kai with your family and even do Traditional Games.

Nahea:  you can celebrate matariki by making or designing kites to fly , Kites have always played an important role in Māori culture, particularly during the winter season when they were flown to signify the start of Matariki, the Māori New Year.

Punaiuru: Another way you can celebrate matariki is by performing hakas and by painting tumokos . These are very important to maoris .

Nahea : What are some of the foods we eat on matariki?

Punaiuru: The typical modern hangi includes lamb and pork, but traditional foods are also likely to feature on the menu - shellfish, seafood, vegetables, plants and herbs gathered from the forest.

Nahea: Are there any particular games we play during matariki

Punaiuru: Yes we can play with pois , sticks  Ki - o - rahi  and many more !!

Nahea: Thank you for listening to our video . Hope you have a good time during Matariki , don't forget to leave a positive comment …….
